Don't get me wrong, THIS is how I really feel about makeup!

This afternoon I was going over my post from yesterday in my mind (please tell me I'm not the only one out there who does this), and it occurred to me that my last post makes me sound as though I am ANTI-MAKEUP. Record scratch!

Sometimes I wear makeup!

That is SOOOOOOO not the case. I am a huge believer in the POWER of makeup. Really!

I am NOT a huge believer in haters and shamers who try to tell women when they SHOULD wear it. Or that they are invisible if they don't. It's a stupid standard, men aren't generally subjected to it and they still earn way more money than we do.

HERE'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MAKEUP:
1. It's FUN.
2. It's CREATIVE.
3. It's POWERFUL

Yes, I actually think makeup can be used to give us an edge-when we want it to. "That's right, I showed up to this meeting, prepared to the hilt, and I STILL had time to treat you all to a kick-ass smokey eye. You're welcome."

I realized the power of makeup in my thirties, when I went from being a "behind-the-scenes" junior designer to being a "in-the-spotlight" designer, speaker and coach. I was never a big makeup-wearer and pretty much slid through the 80s and 90s on liquid eyeliner and occasional bright-red Wet 'N Wild lippy.

When I started to be more in the forefront of my life and business, I started to feel like it was time to either develop some actual makeup application skills or completely give it up altogether. My ratchet attempts at face painting were definitely NOT HELPING. It's hard to assert your authority in your field when your face is strictly from Amateursville.

Fortunately for me, makeup application is a learnable skill. And now that we have YOUTUBE? Jackpot! I have found the greatest products and techniques from some of my favorite Youtubers (a short list is below). It's even become fun for me to play around with makeup. Who knew?

The even better part is that people started taking me more seriously. Like, "Wow, if she can get her face and style together like this, maybe she can help me get myself together, too!" I also started to feel more confident about how I look, on and off-camera, because I knew I could deal with bad hair days or blemishes. I don't think men get the chance to feel that way very often.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I have to wear it all the time.

Sometimes I don't wear makeup!

I ONLY wear makeup when I feel like it. I certainly would never refrain from helping people or sharing valuable information on Periscope because I didn't have my "face" on.  I am getting pretty annoyed about these peri-trolls and their "Why are you even on Persicope without makeup?"

I've noticed that most of the men I follow on Periscope tend to look as if they spent as much time on their appearance as I do for my "Word of the Day" pre-workout scopes-only their version is to be unshaven, wearing a baseball cap to hide the bedhead. Know who gives them grief about it? NO ONE.  Of course they would never speak at a conference of appear on television looking like this. But they are sharing on Periscope on-the-fly, just like the rest of us, so WHO CARES if they need a shave? Not me! As long as they are giving me life-improving content, I'm good.

All I'm saying is, can we all just calm down about this? If you're on Periscope to see/chat up hot chicks in heavy makeup, there are literally thousands of other places you can do that. My scope is not one of them. The same goes for pretty much all other social media, too, as far as I'm concerned. Nobody gets to tell anybody what they have to say or how they have to look.

On the other hand, when I am made up and blinged out? You know I'm shooting as much video as I possibly can! Can't let that hard work go to waste!

I guess I'm just complicated that way.

I generally broadcast and post when the mood strikes (like now), and if that means my awesome, annual Fitbloggin selfie with Alan (@Sweating_It_Off) happens with a bare face, year after year...

There's a 3rd one of these somewhere...

so be it.

PERISCOPE: What I learned from a "DEAD" CRAB #lawofattraction #motivation #sorrynotsorry

Some of my greatest teachers are crustaceans.

Okay, the cat's out of the bag.

I pretty much always look a hot mess on Periscope. 

No, I don't even take a second to run a comb through my hair. Yes, I suppose it is "unprofessional", but I will probably continue to do it anyway.

Here's what I figure: there are people out there who will be willing to work with me anyway. Right? There must be plenty of folks who would hire me to help them make peace with their bodies while they try to transform their lives (btw if you are one of those people, email me at MyCoachMargo@Gmail.com or visit my coaching site MargoPorras.com for more info/endshamelessplug). There are even people who will choose to hire me to speak or write on the subject.

Plus, I choose to believe my troll-doll bedhead enhances my woo-woo-crystal-bruja-cred.

I don't know about you, but lately I've been noticing that there are literally MILLIONS of people out there who make a great living EVERY DAY without makeup, without beautifully coiffed blunt bobs, even without MANICURES-gasp!

They're called men. Perhaps you've heard of them?
NEXT DAY ADDENDUM: I realized this morning that the above min-rant makes it sound like I'm anti-makeup. Nothing could be further from the truth. I just don't like having to deal with internet haters' attempts to shame me into wearing it before going online. I think there's a post there somewhere...

Today's word of the day was ATTRACT.

We spoke about it in terms of "the law of attraction" (you can view the replay HERE) but later I got to thinking about how what YOU ATTRACT is up to YOU. No one else gets to tell you what get to attract. 

Because appearances can be very, very deceiving, and you never know who is going to teach you something when you are open to learn. It may be a dead crab. Or a live one.

So here's the thing, I've said it before but it bears repeating:

I have the most beautiful and talented godchildren on the planet. If you have godchildren of your own, I pity you. You will never know the joy of being godmother to perfect children. Sorry 'bout it.

Okay, I say children, but two out of three of them are now old enough to vote.

Hope you are all extremely well.  I am trying to keep it together in the middle of a sweltering heat wave. I do NOT do well in the heat, fabulous ones. It makes me pretty unpleasant to be around (at least, that's what I hear). But I've got to get it together because I've got BIG stuff going on this weekend!

I've got to be CAMERA-READY. Or, more specifically, INTERNET-CAMERA-READY.

See ya in hell, 30s! #bigbirthday

As I write this, the last moments of my 30s are quickly ticking away...and I couldn't be happier.

Don't get me wrong, there were a LOT of things I'm grateful for (like my kids) but, at the end of the day, the 30s totally kicked my ass. I'm ready to be all, "My 30s? Don't even get me started! Just pour me another Skinny Girl mojito and let's talk about which character from The Facts of Life would have the best one-woman show in Vegas." In fact, I was ready for them to be over this time last year. I felt about turning 39 the same way Edina Monsoon felt about turning 40...

What does tomorrow hold? I have no idea. And that's pretty awesome.

My WICKED WORKOUT FLASHBACK! *shudder*

As many of you know, I try to work my exercise in throughout the day. Carrying my toddler son up the stairs in my home helps tone my legs, arms and core (one day I'll be able to prove he's made of granite). I walk just about everywhere and when I drive I park at least a block away from my destination. When I do have some extra time, I might take a Zumba class or do one of my beloved Richard Simmons videos. It works for me and I have noticed that I've gotten slowly and steadily more active over the last few years. I've even signed up for THREE 5ks this spring alone, something I would never have done even a year ago. Go me!

I've said it before: Richard Simmons is a National Treasure!

Tonight I took a glance at my pedometer: just over 16,000 steps. Not bad! And I started wondering, why did I HATE exercise for so much of my life? What was so bad about it anyway? And that's when I had a WICKED WORKOUT FLASHBACK from the bad old days of my youth! (cue the Alfred Hitchcock violins)

WOW! What a week! I've been doing a lot of work on my podcast, lining up some guests FABULOSAS for you all-so stay tuned :)

So......the weight loss program....not so good.

I've been SUPER stalled and am SO sick of feeling tired and out of shape! I've been quite good at tracking my Weight Watchers Points Plus but have two GLARING weak points in my program:

1. I've NOT been good about meeting the daily "Good Health Guidelines" of the WW program, namely getting enough water and fruits and veggies

2. Exercise? No, not really.

And here we are on the brink of candy season followed by the avalanche of holiday eating-AAAAAGGHHH!!!

Fortunately for me? I'm not alone in this boat. Some of my sister bloggers over at San Diego Momfia feel exactly the same way and we have decided to get as fit as we possibly can before Halloween. Some are calling it "Countdown to Candy" and some are calling it "Mom to MILF"- Personally, I prefer "The Momfia Fitness Challenge!" 

We're all taking different roads to reach our goal. I'm going to be following the Weight Watchers Points Plus program (really-I promise!) and I'll be trying out slow-motion strength training with the Amazing Ana at The Perfect Workout. I've already had a couple of sessions and let me tell you, EVERYTHING is sore!!! 

I can totally look like this by Halloween, right?

BLOG HOP! 25 things you don't know about me....yet.

The lovely Christine of Everyday Mama issued a challenge to the rest of us: share 25 things your readers don't know about you. So, without a great deal of preamble, here goes!

1. I graduated from my Catholic high school wearing a black Hefty garbage bag. It was an outdoor graduation and we had a flash floods, torrential rain and no backup plan.

2. I know all the words to Marty Robbins' "El Paso". I feel this is such a remarkable achievement that I have listed it on my resume.

3. "El Paso" is not my favorite Marty Robbins song. It's "Devil Woman".

4. I skipped 2nd grade. As far as I can tell this has had no great effect on my life today, except that I never learned to write in cursive and graduated high school at 16.

5. I can recite the alphabet, backwards, in under 10 seconds. And yes, you can totally call me on that.

6. The celebrity I'm most often told I look like? Linda Ronstadt. Been hearing that one since I was in kindergarten.

8. I met my husband in the drama department of our local community college.

9. EVERY program on the new Oprah Winfrey Network makes me cry. What is she trying to prove?

16. When I was 10, I got caught in a riptide and had to be rescued by a lifeguard. Muy Baywatch!

17. My dream car is the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Which I will never own, because I will never be able to drive it. (see #13)

18. I had a rather traumatic birth after which half of my face was paralyzed for quite some time. There's no visible evidence of it now, but I don't see or hear as well on that side.

19. Despite growing up in San Diego, I've never been to the horseraces at Del Mar-even though it's something I've always wanted to do.

20. I also know all the words to the Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl". That one? Is not on my resume.


21. I feel about Target the way that Holly Golightly feels about Tiffany's.

22. When I lived in the NYC area, I once went to the top of the World Trade Center and loved it, even though I am terrified of heights.

23. I was also in NYC on September 11, 2001.

24.  Even though I love the beach and swimming in the ocean, I've never been surfing.

25. I got my very first Barbie for my 17th birthday from my friend Robert. She was awesome. My mom didn't believe Barbies were healthy for little girls to play with-until she had a granddaughter.

Well, it's the day after Blogher and I am BEAT!! The food, the drink, the friends-it was all a GIGANTE BLAST! (plus? I got soooo many questions about my cute Jockey Person to Person clothes!)

I'm way too pooped to do a real post about it right now, but I wanted to share one of the highlights of the whole conference for me: I DANCED IN A FLASHMOB! It was put together by sistah Momfia-members Theresa (@rockonmommies) and Mary (@mamamaryshow) and somehow 175 gabby bloggers managed to keep #OPERATIONGLORY a secret for weeks!

Hi everyone! I'm still trying to get back into the groove after my whirlwind trip to Chicago. Yes, I was there during "the storm" but I didn't let the lightning and flash floods dampen my spirits! My other favorite item? The AVIATOR JACKET. So chic! And sooooo comfy too. This is a jacket that you could wear ANYWHERE. I had to have one! It's made from bonded fleece (which makes it uber-soft) and is machine washable. What?  That's right, Nacho Mama does NOT do "Dry Clean Only"! I know I'll be reaching for this jacket again and again this fall and winter.

Please excuse the shaky camerawork! My kids were being extra noisy so I had to escape to my bedroom balcony. Believe me, I know, it's SUPER shaky! :)
