I am getting ready to attend the Women's Wellness Conference in Orange County at the end of this week-I can't wait to geek out with some of my fave health gurus! One speaker I'm particularly looking forward to hearing is Dr. Sara Gottfried, who wrote The Hormone Reset Diet, a 21-day detox/reset that I've just completed (see my last post). What were my results? Watch (or listen to) the video to find out!
I made that video about a week ago and yes, I am still eating as though I am on the Hormone Reset Diet! I'm feeling terrific so there's no real reason to change anything for the time being.
One thing I forgot to mention was that the final phase of the diet involves removing household cleaners and personal care products that contain potential endocrine disruptors. I'd mostly done this already but I had to admit my makeup bag had some seriously toxic stuff in it. Did I find any great replacements? I did! Watch the video to find out.
I really love the SkinDeep app, I hope they continue to add more products to their database.
Do YOU have any natural makeup faves? Let me know! Wishing you love with extra cheese, Nacho Mama
Ahhh...Perimenopause. So little is known and understood about it that the word does not appear on my phone's autotype list. I like to think of it as the lobby between my clueless youth and the wisdom-rich years I have to look forward to. As in...
Only without the candy, soda and cigarettes (I do have wisdom-rich years to look forward to, right?).
I first became aware of Perimenopause a couple of years ago when it seemed like my health was sliding off the rails, despite all my best and vigilant efforts. My long-suffering doctor suggested to me that my hormones might be to blame for the poor sleep, mystery weight gain and the rest of the symptoms I complained of.
Yep, Perimenopause. Every now and again it rears it's annoying, bloated head and we have to go back to the drawing board with my food/fitness/supplement routine. Did you know it can start as early as your thirties? I don't know about you, but I'm starting to doubt the gender of Mother Nature. Uncool!
Of course being the wellness blogger and science geek that I am, I immediately set out to research the booty off this whole Perimenopause thingy. Unfortunately, there's not a that much out there. I have found a few extremely helpful resources and thought it might be a good idea to share them with you. You know, just in case you have a friend who might be going through this, too, or whatever.
WARNING: this video is like 11 minutes long. Maybe find something to do while you're listening, like folding laundry, walking around the block or practicing your Batgirl combat moves?

In other news: I will soon be adding "Certified Nutrition Coach" to my services! In the meantime, though, I'll be slogging my way through this detox. I'll let you know how the rest of it goes. If I survive, that is.
...to see the WIZARD! Or, at least, talk about him behind his back.
In our latest episode of BOOK VS MOVIE (also available on iTunes and Stitcher) Margo and I delve into the trippy, often scary, world of OZ.
Yeah...I would never read this book to my kids. They can't even make it through the movie without leaving the room when those flying monkeys show up.

Happy FALL!! (No really, I mean it this time. Mother Nature has finally dropped the temperatures down to the high 70s around here. Brrrrr!)
Did someone say FALL?
I know, I've been seriously neglecting Nacho Mama's Podcast lately. Things have been crazy around here. The water heater burst at my studio AND at home(nothing like a cold shower to make you appreciate the unseasonable warmth), the oven broke, a bunch of electrical outlets suddenly stopped working...you know the drill. And all of this while preparing to move and doing TONS of training for the NEW ROLE I'll soon be taking on at Weight Watchers (more on that later, it's seriously weeks of training but it should be fun).
Since we've got the holiday's coming up, though, I'm planning to do a series of short podcasts to address some of the pitfalls we'll all be facing and share some of the best advice I've heard on how to handle them. If you don't already subscribe to the podcast, just search "Nacho Mama's Podcast" on iTunes or Stitcher.
In the meantime...I have not one but TWO new episodes of "Book VS Movie" for your enjoyment (yeah, I've been busy doing that as well. Where do I find the time?). First, we take on The Firm. Tom Cruise as a star player on the Harvard Basketball team? Annnnd it gets less believable from there. Listen HERE or by searching for "Book VS Movie" on iTunes or Stitcher.
And now, our 7th episode: The Princess Bride. Did you know it was a book? Inconceivable! Click the player to listen now.

How is your Fall going? What are you going to be for Halloween?Do you even dress up? We still do most of the time. My husband thinks I should be the Long Island Medium. I'm totally considering it. In other news, I am not missing The Biggest Loser AT ALL. What do you think of it this season, if you're watching? I'm dying to know if it's improved!
If you're reading this anywhere but NachoMamasBlog.com, then you are reading stolen content, my friend. Please don't support thieving mentirosos sin verguenza, just get this stuff from the source at NachoMamasBlog.com! Wishing you love with extra cheese- Nacho Mama
Of course you do. Only, this scene? Not in the original book AT ALL. Not the running, not even the braces. That's right. NO RUNNING. "Run, Forrest!" is not in the book.
And Jenny? Yeah, that whole situation is WAY different, too.
That's right, it's time for BOOK VS MOVIE! Gump-style.

I hope you'll find this post I did for San Diego Momfia helpful! I was honored to be asked into the home of fellow Momfia-member Beth (@hipmamab of La La La) and her husband Jason (@petcobra of Dad Centric) to help them arrange the rather large bookcase in their family room. The post includes some general tips for your bookcase, whatever the size-enjoy!
Gorgeous, full-color home decorating books, whether on your bookshelf, coffee table or nightstand, can be a costly addiction habit. Just trust me on this one.
My friends often raise their eyebrows at my HUGE collection of home decor tomes. “YOU bought all of these?” Um, yes. What, so because I’m an interior designer all my ideas are supposed to just pop into my head while I sip my daily organic green tea in my “meditation corner?” If only! I always say, a designer is only as good as her resources, and it’s my job to see what’s going on in the world. And besides that, these books are so pretty.
So then the next thing my friends ask is “Well, which one do you think I should get?” Which is, in fact, a sticky one because everyone’s taste is different and sometimes people don’t like what they think they like (does that make sense?)
Not to worry! To paraphrase Russel Wright, the best and most useful home decorating book I can recommend is for EVERYBODY. It truly is the only decorating book you’ll ever need (notice I didn’t say it’s the only one you’ll ever want, which is a different matter altogether.) It has no photos(just drawings) and costs just over 10 bucks. And you know what else? It fits in your purse.
It’sApartment Therapy: the eight step home cure, by Maxwell Gillingham Ryan, the mastermind behind the ba-rilliant Apartment Therapy website. Don’t let the title throw you, this book is a handy guide to every room/area of your home, whether that home is a tiny NY studio or a sprawling McMansion in Texas. What to know how to create an oasis of peace in your bedroom? It’s in here. Want to know how to make your home “flow?” It’s in here. (NOTE: This is not the “companion” volume, Apartment Therapy Presents, though that book is good too.) This book is compact and accessible, taking you on a process of self-discovery to help you make the most of your home, whatever that may be. You can do the recommended “8-week cure” (even implementing some of his tips can make a huge difference) and you’ll not only have a happier, more peaceful home that feels like YOU, you’ll have a party at the end to celebrate with all your friends!
The other decorating book I find myself reaching for again and again is Tim Street Porter'sCasa Mexicana.
It's out of print, but very easy to find on Amazon and even in some stores. Even if you're not latina (like me) you'll find this book is filled with all kinds of ideas big and small, that you'll want to try in your own space. From the large, austere homes of Barragan, to festive ideas for table settings, art display and entertaining, this book shows all of the practices discussed in Apartment Therapy implemented in living color. And because Mexican interiors (like their American counterparts) come in a vast array of styles, I can safely say there's something in this book for everyone. I've had this book for at least 10 years and never run out of inspiration from it's vibrant photographs. If you happen to come across it in your local used bookstore-BUY IT!
So you see? I had to buy all those other books so I could be sure and recommend the best ones to you. And I’m afraid I’ll have to keep buying those big, expensive picture books, you know, just to be absolutely sure. Because I care.
